6th, 7th and 8th Grade Grading Policy

The following applies to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes:
Class grades are based on:
30% Assignments Done in Class
30% Skills Iowa and Skills Tutor
30% Independent Reading
10% Whole Class Book Test
Mid-Term
½ reading points completed
When a student’s Reading grade is a B or above, they may read books that have a 4.0 or above book level no matter what their individual IRL is. There are several excellent books to read at that level too.

Iowa Test of Basic Skills- Reading Comprehension Scores
Fall - Stanford Diagnostic Reading test
Daily Homework
Students are asked to read a MINIMUM of 30 minutes each day of the week.

Reading Comprehension
Students read a variety of fiction, non-fiction, biography, and poetry. They are expected not only to understand the literal meaning of grade-appropriate text, but also to interpret meaning through complex processes of analysis, inference, and generalization. To read grade-appropriate text with comprehension, students must demonstrate the process of:
Factual Understanding
• Understand stared information
• Determine the meaning of new words from their context
Inference and Interpretation
• Draw conclusions, make inferences, and deduce meaning
• Infer traits, feelings, and motives of characters
• Interpret information in new contexts
• Interpret non-literal language
Analysis and Generalization
• Determine the main idea of a text
• Identify the author’s views or purpose
• Analyze the style or structure of a text
