Quarter Projects in Chemistry and Physics

November 17, 2009

Chemistry: Elemental
Chemistry students are currently researching different elements.  The main goal of this project is to make students more aware of how elements impact their daily lives.  Other information covered my include but is not limited to history of element, abundance, and biological importance.  Components of this project include the following:  abstract, works cited, model, and oral presentation.  Students are also graded on their work efforts in class while working on the project and while listening to others.

Quarter two project is a career project.  Students report on a career of interest.  No two students from the same class are allowed to report on the same career; however, they can report on related career such as an RN and a LPN or Nurse-midwife.  In their reports they are expected to cover the duties, the working conditions, the training, the salary range, related occupations, and the job outlook.  If they let their parent/guardian read their report, then they earn 3 bonus points.  If they want an "A" on the project then they will need to locate a school that offers a degree pertaining to their career.

Physics: Design Your Own Experiment
The students have been practicing writing up procedures, performing experiments, graphing the results, drawing conclusions based upon their graphs, and determining their percent error or deviation.  They will apply this knowledge to their 1st quarter investigation over pendulums.  Mathematical relationships between variables will have to be supported by their experimental results.

On your mark.  Ready. Set. Go.

Second quarter project in physics is a rubberband powered car.  The students have been given both their limitations and their goal.  These cars are expected not to stop on a dime but within a decimeter.  They are allowed to work together but each student must have their own car to run on the due date.  Besides the car's results the students also need to make a promotional brochure about their car, a set of blue prints, and a journal of their struggles developing their car.
