Montgomery County Endowment Grant Funds Awarded to ROCMS

Last fall, the Red Oak Rotary Club contacted Red Oak School Superintendent, Terry Schmidt, to propose a joint project to improve learning for students, beautify an area in the heart of Red Oak, and provide a more appropriate place for community members to enjoy the outdoors with a proposed “cage” area improvement. Barbara Sims, Middle School Principal, along with some Middle School students, measured and researched the “cage” area adjacent to the Middle School building. Students took pictures and discussed the improvements that they would like to see at the “cage” area. They then put pictures and information together into a Power Point presentation, and Mrs. Sims and Mr. Schmidt returned to the Rotary Club to share that information.

The Rotarians embraced the project, and with the help of Mr. Schmidt applied and received a $20,000 Montgomery County Endowment Grant to start that project. The Red Oak School Board of Directors will match those grant funds. The Red Oak Middle School Student Council sold cookie dough in February and raised about $5,000 to add to the “cage” project. We are still about $15,000 short of funds for phase I of the project, but we are hopeful the community will come forward and help us with this endeavor. We have a great start and wish to thank the contributors to the Endowment Grant Fund and the Red Oak Rotarians. What a great partnership this has been and will continue to be!
