1-2-1 Laptop Initiative

ONE- TO-ONE LAPTOP INITIATIVE FOR RED OAK COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

The Red Oak Community School Board has started exploring a One-To-One (1-2-1) Laptop initiative for the district. During the January 24, 2011 Board of Directors meeting, representatives from the Van Meter School District presented their successes and challenges with their One-To-One program.

There were a number of questions brought up by those in attendance:

  • How can the Red Oak Community School District fund a One-To-One initiative?
  • If Red Oak cannot fund the project at all grade levels in the beginning, at what level should we begin?
  • A project like this involves more than purchasing laptops—what needs to happen to get our district ready?
  • What type of hardware and operating systems should Red Oak use?...netbooks, Macintosh laptops, Windows 7 laptops, iPads, etc.
  • What are the real benefits of becoming a One-To-One school?

I am very excited about this technology initiative! It is wonderful to have a School Board and Administration team that has a vision for leading our district into the 21st Century! Laptops are a great tool that we can use to broaden our students’ learning beyond the traditional classroom. This initiative will allow our students more opportunities to gain the necessary skills to compete in this ever changing, technologically advanced world--by collaborating and connecting with other students and professionals all over the world!

I think that if would definitely be beneficial for our students to have the one to one lap tops. At the middle school it's often a struggle to have computers be available for students. I have found that students are more engaged when they do projects where they use technology. For example right now we are creating glogs in my classes, and the kids are really seeming to enjoy them.
